Global New News Desk -

The procession commemorates the 1967 anniversary of Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem.

The flag procession to celebrate the annual Jerusalem Day is usually on May 10; But this year's procession was canceled against the backdrop of excitement. Tensions escalated into violence on May 10.

Last month, at least 256 people were killed in Gaza in 11 days of bloody fighting between Israel and Hamas, and 13 were killed in Israel.

The procession was supposed to go through the Muslim neighborhood of the old city on the same day. At the last minute, the Israeli authorities diverted the procession and it was eventually canceled.

Hamas began firing rockets at Israel after warning Israel to withdraw from the holy site. Israel responded by launching counter-airstrikes targeting Gaza.

Israel's outgoing government says a flag procession of Israeli nationalists could pass through the Old City of Jerusalem next week if police approve.

The procession was scheduled for Thursday. But the organizers canceled the procession after Israeli police rejected the proposed route, citing security concerns.

Palestinians see the procession as provocative,

The Palestinian group Hamas has warned that allowing the procession could lead to a new round of clashes in Gaza.

After a meeting of the Israeli cabinet on Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the flag procession would be allowed on June 15. However, "the organizers of the procession will decide how the procession will be by talking to the police."

The Israeli parliament, the Knesset, will vote on Sunday to elect a new government. After the new alliance was approved by the parliament after 12 years in power, Mr. Netanyahu must step down. Mr. Netanyahu is the longest-serving prime minister in Israel.

If the coalition led by right-wing nationalist Naftali Bennett and moderate Yair Lapid gets approval to form a new government in Israel on Sunday, they will make the final decision on whether to hold the flag procession. This procession has not taken place in the last two years.

Celebrating the anniversary of Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem,

The annual Jerusalem Day flag procession is usually held on May 10 and commemorates the anniversary of Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East War.

East Jerusalem is part of the old city and the place is sacred to people of both Muslim and Jewish religions. It is home to the Holy Haram al-Sharif for Muslims and the Temple Mount for Jews.

On May 10, hundreds of young Israeli nationalists marched through the city's Damascus gates, carrying flags. They sang patriotic songs and chanted slogans from the procession. Sources, BBC
