At least 53 people have been killed and several others injured in a robbery in Nigeria. The incident took place in the Zamfara region of western Nigeria. Several others were injured in the attack. A gang of robbers carried out the murder. AFP quoted police and local residents as saying on Saturday.



The robbers fired indiscriminately at the villagers, attacked the farmers in the fields and chased many villagers to the surrounding forest, carrying out extensive looting.




According to the locals, the robbers went to the farmers' land and attacked them. Locals said the attack took place between Thursday and Friday. Gunmen on motorcycles attacked the villages of Kadawa, Kawata, Maduba, Ganda Samu, Solava and Assawa in Jurmi district. They fired on residents.




Jamfara police spokesman Mohammad Shehu said 14 bodies had been taken to the state capital, Gusau, on Friday. Police personnel have been deployed in the area after the attack. According to local residents, 39 more bodies were recovered and buried in nearby towns.





Haruna Abdul Karim, a resident of Dauran, said, "Yesterday we recovered a total of 39 bodies, including 28 from the village, and buried them here."


Musa Arzika, a local resident who came to attend the funeral, said, "It was very dangerous for the victims to attend the funeral." Because the bandits were stationed in the nearby Jurmi forest, they could attack again at any time.


Zamfara Governor Belo Matowale issued a statement on the incident on Friday. In a statement, he called on locals to protect themselves.
