During the closure of educational institutions due to coronavirus, 18 primary school students of Ghatail upazila of Tangail fell victim to child marriage. Talking to the families of the children sitting on the wedding pedestal, the locals said that the marriages took place due to poverty, lack of education, pressure from the people around them. At the same time, they also talked about the social security of the girls. The teachers of the school concerned about the child marriage said that some of them are coming back to school even after getting married. A headmaster, who did not want to be named, said the students were getting married as the school was closed in Corona. However, the marriage rate has come down a lot compared to the past. In Ghatail Upazila, no counseling was observed to stop child marriage during school hours. However, Tangail District Deputy Director for Women's Affairs Meherunnesa Moni said, "We had only a virtual meeting on the issue during the Coronation period. It was not possible to hold a backyard meeting." There were no instructions in this regard. After the school and college opened, we found out what had happened! Going to the field, we are starting work anew. Many of the students of ninth-tenth class who got married have already become pregnant. Many students have also been victims of child marriage in secondary schools in Ghatail. There are 92 schools and madrasas at the secondary level. According to the Upazila Secondary Education Office, so far 45 institutions have provided information on child marriage. According to the information received, 130 students have got married.
But a simultaneous investigation revealed that 55 students were married in one school. However, the head of the institution claimed that the information of all classes has not been available yet, the number may increase further. This old disorder of the society is not being eradicated in any way. At the secondary level of education, not only are students falling victim to child marriage, but also within the primary level.
In 2019, a contemporary search revealed a picture of a child marriage in Ghatail. At that time, 506 female students were victims of child marriage in 6 months at the secondary level. On the other hand, when the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs sought information from the Ministry, they said that 231 child marriages took place in four months in 64 districts from March to June last year. In such a situation, National Girl Child Day will be celebrated on September 30.
In this regard, Ghatail Upazila Primary Education Officer Masudur Rahman said, as the educational institution was closed due to coronavirus, so nothing could be done to prevent child marriage. These issues are going to be known after the opening of the school.
