Attack on UNO's house in Barisal: People of the city are hostage to one

Global New News Desk -

Attack on UNO's house in Barisal: Clash between mayor and police. So far, two cases have been registered in connection with the attack on the residence of Barisal Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Munibur Rahman. Meanwhile, police have arrested 13 people, including Hasan Mahmud Babu, joint general secretary of the metropolitan Awami League, and Ahmed Shahariar Babu, general secretary of the Rupatli Bus Workers Union.

Kotwali Model Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barisal Metropolitan Police Nurul Islam said the plaintiff in one of the two cases was UNO Munibur Rahman of Barisal Sadar and the other was the plaintiff police.

The UNO's case alleges assault and vandalism at his home. Apart from this, the cases filed by the police have been accused of obstructing government work, attacking the police, insulting and vandalizing the people.

OC Nurul Islam further said that in two cases, 30 to 40 people have been named and hundreds more unidentified people have been accused.

Meanwhile, RAB and police members suddenly surrounded the residence of City Corporation Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah on Kalibari Road in the city on Thursday, August 19 at around 12:15 pm. The executive magistrate of the district administration was also present there. At that time the leaders and activists wanted to go inside the mayor's house but the police obstructed them. However, after a while, the law enforcers left.

OC Nurul Islam said, "We had information that some of those involved in the night incident were staying there. That's why I went there, but I didn't find anyone like that there and no one was arrested from there.

What the locals are saying,

Some local Awami League leaders have said that after the death of former Barisal mayor Shawkat Hossain Hiron a few years ago, his people became close to Sadar MP Zahid Farooq.

Since then, there have been two factions within the Awami League led by Zahid Farooq and Mayor Sadiq Abdullah.

Zahid Farooq is scheduled to join a program on August 22 which the local leaders think the mayor is upset with the idea that the executive is coordinating.

That's why people close to him are involved in the attack on UNO's house in the name of removing posters and banners.

No one talks about that

Barisal Sadar MP Zahid Farooq is a state minister in the government.

A city corporation councilor, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the BBC: "Come to Barisal, you will see a poster of the whole city. He is the mayor. No poster banner of any other leader can be put up in this city."

The councilor said, "In the first meeting after the formation of the city corporation, the mayor gave a dialogue saying, 'I can't answer to anyone, I will answer to Sheikh Hasina and to my father.' The mayor's father is former chief whip of parliament Abul Hasnat Abdullah, an influential Awami League leader and member of parliament.

The councilor complained, "The people of the city are hostages to someone. If someone says something, his house is bulldozed or the door is littered or threatened," the councilor said on condition of anonymity.

Some Awami League leaders said that in the last one year, many people including college teachers and public representatives could not speak even though they were physically assaulted.

Talk to you soon and keep up the good content

They allege that Balumahal, the bus owners' association, illegally collected fish pollen from the river and sold it, and even the names of those involved in smuggling drugs from Teknaf to Dhaka by road are well known in Barisal.

"But if they talk, they will shoot straight," said an Awami League activist.

They also complained that the general secretary of the Barisal city committee, the mayor, had formed a city committee with his own people so that many of the old local leaders did not have a place.

Even many local journalists are reluctant to talk about it. One journalist said, "The press club is named after a person. Do you understand the situation?" Despite trying with the mayor, it was not possible to talk about last night's attack.
