In that BBC Bangla survey, the founder of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, became the greatest Bengali of all time in the nomination of listeners. Today is his life story.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Bajrakantha guided the Bengali people of the then East Pakistan in 1971 to the path of liberation and independence.

"... Remember- when I have given blood, I will give more blood, I will liberate the people of this country inshallah. This time the struggle is for our liberation - this time the struggle is for freedom. Joy Bangla." Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib called for independence and prepared the people for an all-out non-cooperation movement through this thunderous announcement at a public meeting at Race Course Maidan in Dhaka on March 7, 1971.

"His March 7th speech inspired the entire Bengali nation to fight empty-handed against a well-trained army of the world and win that battle. I could not find Mujibur Rahman at the most important time in our history. "

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on 16 March 1920 in Tungipara, Gopalganj. His father Sheikh Lutfar Rahman was the Serestadar of Gopalganj Sessions Court and his mother Saira Khatun.

He was the third child of six siblings. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib started his education at Gimadanga Primary School in 1926 at the age of seven.

At a very young age he married a relative, Begum Fazilatunnesa.

At the age of nine, he was admitted to Gopalganj Public School and later matriculated from Gopalganj Missionary School.

While studying at Gopalganj Missionary School, AK Fazlul Haque, the then Chief Minister of the Bengal Presidency, and later Hossain Shahid Suhrawardy, the then Prime Minister of Bengal and Prime Minister of Pakistan, visited the school. Mr. Suhrawardy, a Bengali Muslim leader of Kashmiri descent, later profoundly influenced the political life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib.

After passing the entrance examination in 1942, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib was admitted to Calcutta Islamia College, now known as Maulana Azad College. This college affiliated to Calcutta University was quite famous at that time. From this college he actively started student politics.

But from school life he has proved his leadership skills.

He joined the Bengal Muslim League in 1943 and formally entered politics in 1944 by attending the conference of the All Bengal Muslim Students League held at Kushtia in present-day Bangladesh.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib was elected general secretary of Islamia College Students Union in 1948 and at the same time he was appointed assistant to Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy. In the same year, he played an important role in the provincial elections for the Muslim League.

During this time he took part in the active movement on behalf of the Bengal Muslim League for the formation of a separate Muslim state in Pakistan.

He did his B.A. in 1948 from Islamia College under Calcutta University. After the separation of India and Pakistan, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib returned to East Pakistan and enrolled in the law department of Dhaka University. But he did not finish reading the law after authorities expelled him from the university for allegedly inciting university workers to protest.

He founded the East Pakistan Muslim Chhatra League on 4 January 1948 through which he became one of the leading student leaders. At this time he leaned towards socialism and thought that the only way to improve poverty, unemployment and living standards was to develop socialism.

Sheikh Mujib played a leading role in the mass movement against Muhammad Ali Jinnah's declaration of Urdu as the sole state language of East Pakistan.

Husain Shaheed Suhrawardy and Maulana Bhasani formed the East Pakistan Awami Muslim League in 1949.

Friend Sheikh Mujibur Rahman left the Muslim League to join the new party and was made joint general secretary of the East Pakistan section.

The main demand of the opposition political forum called United Front formed in 1954 under the leadership of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy and Maulana Bhasani was to demand more autonomy for East Pakistan. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib won the Gopalganj constituency in the 1954 elections on the ticket of this alliance. He was then given charge of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

But within months of the election, the central government disbanded the United Front.

Ataus Samad, a veteran journalist in Dhaka, told BBC Bangla while making this program. Sheikh Mujib came to the Awami League under the leadership of Suhrawardy and strengthened the party with Maulana Bhasani.

The word "Muslim" was unanimously dropped from the name of the party in a special session of the Bangladesh Awami Muslim League in October 1955. Sheikh Mujib was again elected general secretary of the party.

Martial law was imposed in Pakistan in 1956. After being banned from all political activities, he had to spend several years in jail again due to his struggle over various political issues.

Then in 1971, along with other general student leaders, he secretly formed an organization called Swadhin Bangla Biplobi Parishad, whose aim was to work for the independence of Bangladesh.

Ataus Samad told BBC Bangla that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the responsibility of reviving the Awami League in 1984 after the death of Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy. At a conference of opposition political parties held in Lahore on 5 and 6 February 1966, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made a "six-point demand" on behalf of the Awami League for the establishment of full autonomy in East Pakistan.

"Sheikh Saheb dared to declare six points, but he did so in Lahore. He announced them at a conference in West Pakistan, which made him the number one accused in the Agartala conspiracy case on January 3, 1966," he said. Ataus Samad.

The case alleges that Sheikh Mujib and his associate Bengali officials conspired to seize East Pakistan at a meeting with the Indian government in Agartala, Tripura, India.

The student movement that started across the country demanding the withdrawal of the case turned into a mass movement at one time. When that mass movement or the mass uprising of 1971 reached its climax, the Pakistani government finally withdrew the case and all the accused, including Sheikh Mujib, were released.

"He was awarded the title of 'Bangabandhu' the day after he was released from the 11-point movement of the students for his release," said Ataus Samad.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was given the title of 'Bangabandhu' on 23 February 1969 at a large public meeting at the Race Course Ground on the initiative of the Central Students' Struggle Council.

Sheikh Mujib made the issue of Bangladesh's independence the main theme of his election campaign in the 1970s, journalist Ataus Samad told BBC Bangla. He said he went with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in many election campaigns. He was seen everywhere talking to him about the six points.

"My demand is to make the country independent," he said. Samad. Sheikh Mujib described this demand as "our demand for survival".

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's close associate. Kamal Hossain told BBC Bangla: "Giving him the title 'Bangabandhu' in the platoon on 23 February 1969 proves how close he has come to the people. This is a change I would say. Because by giving this title of Bangabandhu, he became the undisputed leader of the people.

"Another is to decide the election. The election decision, the result of the election clearly proved that he is the only spokesperson of the Bengalis. But I think it has strengthened his political base a lot," he said. Kamal Hossain.

Intense mass movement started on June 6, 1966 in support of these six-point demands.

Political commentator Sirajul Islam Chowdhury told BBC Bangla that the three great qualities of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's leadership were that he was very brave, determined and uncompromising.

"He was able to pinpoint the main conflict in the state of Pakistan. He knew from experience that Pakistan's conflict with the Bengalis was the main conflict. He had a very attractive force - charisma. He knew he could inspire them. "

Mr. When Sheikh Mujib announced at a public meeting on the occasion of Suhrawardy's death on December 5, 1969 that East Pakistan would henceforth be called "Bangladesh", West Pakistani politicians and military officials called him a separatist leader.

When the Awami League, under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, won an absolute majority in the provincial assembly in the 1970 elections, the election results polarized the two parts of Pakistan. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, leader of West Pakistan's largest political party, strongly opposes Sheikh Mujib's policy of autonomy.
